A radome is a dielectric
cover placed over an antenna in order to protect it from the
environment. If not properly
designed, it can reduce antenna gain, increase sidelobe levels,
depolarize a signal passing through the wall, increase the antenna noise
temperature, produce a boresight error (BSE) in the signal passing
through the wall and/or create an increase in
the antenna voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR.) Radomes are used
in sophisticated airborne, marine or terrestrial applications and many simple applications such as wireless.
